Overview

The Preparatory year at UTCB is a one-year, full-time, non-degree programme that equips international students with the language and academic skills needed to access Romanian-taught Bachelor, Master or PhD studies. It is organised by the Faculty of Engineering in Foreign Languages, in the field of “Language and Literature”, and is open to both EU and non-EU citizens.

Courses are aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), and students typically reach at least B1 level in Romanian by the end of the year, combining intensive language study with cultural immersion.

Preparatory year at UTCB Romania

Academically, the programme offers a solid foundation in Romanian phonetics, grammar, speaking, listening, reading and writing, complemented by modules on Romanian culture, civilisation and specialized terminology for future studies in engineering, medicine, humanities or social sciences. Professionally, it acts as an essential gateway to the Romanian and European labour markets, as many degree programmes in Romania remain Romanian-taught.

UTCB’s strong technical profile, EU-CONEXUS European University membership and location in Bucharest create excellent prospects for later careers in civil engineering and related fields, as well as broader international opportunities.

Programme Structure

Because Preparatory year at UTCB is a one-year preparatory programme, the entire structure is focused on rapid, intensive language acquisition and cultural integration, framed within a 60-ECTS curriculum. Teaching is organised in two semesters, each combining core language skills with complementary academic and cultural components.

Semester 1 – Foundations (A1–A2)

Students take courses in Phonetics, vocabulary and grammar (A1–A2), Speaking, Comprehension and Writing, building essential skills in everyday communication. A complementary course on Romanian identity and European synchronism introduces key historical and cultural themes and familiarises students with Romania’s position in the EU.

Semester 2 – Consolidation & Specialisation (B1–B2)

The second semester develops Vocabulary and grammar (B1–B2), Speaking, Comprehension and Writing towards an independent user level. Students also study Romanian culture and civilisation and a Specialised language module tailored to future fields (medicine, engineering, humanities, social sciences, mathematics and natural sciences).

Academic Milestones OF Preparatory year at UTCB

  • Continuous assessment (tests, homework, oral presentations).
  • Participation in cultural events, study visits and intercultural activities organised by the Department of Foreign Languages and Communication.
  • Final Examination: Institutional graduation exam in Romanian at the end of the year, organised by FILS, certifying language proficiency for university admission.
