The Preparatory year at USV (Ștefan cel Mare University of Suceava) is a one-year Romanian language program designed for international students who plan to study a future Bachelor, Master or PhD in Romanian. It follows the national framework for the “an pregătitor de limba română pentru cetățenii străini”, a university-level program of at least 28 teaching weeks and 60 ECTS, culminating in a B1-level language exam.
Graduates gain the linguistic and academic skills needed to access degree programs across medicine, engineering, IT, economics, law, humanities and more, both at USV and other Romanian universities. Hosted by the Faculty of Letters and Communication Sciences, the program blends intensive language classes with cultural immersion and field activities in the multicultural region of Bukovina.

Courses gradually move from basic grammar and vocabulary to advanced communication, academic writing and discipline-specific terminology aligned with students’ intended majors. Intercultural projects, such as Romanian culture courses and excursions in the area, give students authentic exposure to daily life and academic expectations. Successfully completing the preparatory year opens doors to state-subsidized or tuition-paying places in Romanian-taught programs nationwide.

The Preparatory year at USV follows the national standard for Romanian preparatory programs: a one-year, full-time course of 60 ECTS, ending with an exam certifying at least B1 level in Romanian. The program is organized by the Faculty of Letters and Communication Sciences and is structured into two semesters combining language, culture and basic disciplinary preparation.
Students begin with intensive courses in Romanian grammar, basic vocabulary, pronunciation and everyday communication, progressing from A1 towards A2 level. Introductory modules on Romanian civilization, academic culture and study skills help students understand university expectations and integrate into campus life. Continuous assessment through tests, oral presentations and short writing tasks ensures steady progress and early identification of learning needs.
In the second semester of Preparatory year at USV, teaching focuses on intermediate language structures, listening and reading for academic purposes, essay writing and presentations, aiming at B1 level. Students engage with discipline-specific vocabulary (e.g., medical, technical, economic or social sciences terminology) aligned with their intended future programs.
Cultural courses and activities, such as excursions and projects like the Via Transilvanica intercultural trip, deepen cultural understanding and communication practice. The year culminates in a final Romanian language exam and the award of a preparatory year completion certificate required for admission to Romanian-taught degree studies.
