The Preparatory year at UPB (Politehnica University of Bucharest) is a one-year, full-time academic program designed for international students who want to continue their studies in Romanian.
It is mandatory for candidates who wish to study in Romanian at UPB (or other Romanian universities) and do not yet hold an accepted Romanian language certificate. Over two semesters, students develop the essential skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking for academic purposes, while also gaining basic terminology linked to future fields such as technical, economic, medical or philological studies.

The course combines structured language progression with cultural integration. The first semester focuses on Romanian language at A1–A2 level and a module in Romanian culture and civilisation; the second semester advances to B1 level with an introduction to specialised language. Upon successful completion of all exams, students receive a graduation certificate that is required for admission to Romanian-taught Bachelor and Master programs in Romania.
