The Preparatory Year at West University of Timișoara (WUT) is a one-year, non-degree program designed for international students who wish to continue their studies in Romanian-taught Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD programmes. WUT is one of the Romanian universities officially accredited to organise this course, which is compulsory for foreign students who do not yet meet the Romanian language requirements for regular degree studies.
During the preparatory year, students gain intensive training in Romanian language, culture and civilisation, alongside introductory subject-specific content tailored to their future field (for example anatomy, physics, chemistry or technical drawing).

The Preparatory Year at West University of Timișoara, is structured as a full-time, campus-based programme hosted by the Faculty of Letters, History, Philosophy and Theology. Students are grouped according to language level and follow a unified curriculum that builds from basic communication skills to advanced academic Romanian over two semesters.
The programme’s plan of study is formally approved and published annually as “Planul de învățământ” for the cohort (Promoția 2025–2026), and assessment follows WUT’s official exam calendar.
Focus on fundamental Romanian grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and everyday communication. Introductory courses in Romanian culture and civilisation familiarise students with history, society and contemporary life. Classroom work emphasises practical oral and written exercises, listening comprehension and basic academic skills, alongside initial introduction to terminology relevant to students’ intended study fields (e.g., medicine, engineering, economics).
The second semester of Preparatory Year at West University of Timișoara, moves towards more complex texts, academic writing, debates and presentations. Students deepen specialist vocabulary (anatomy, physics, chemistry, technical drawing, social sciences or arts, depending on profile) and practise understanding lectures and reading academic materials.
Continuous assessment culminates in a final examination consisting of written and oral components, organised according to a dedicated regulation published by the faculty. Successful candidates receive a language certificate that allows them to apply for Romanian-taught degree programs across Romanian universities.
