Romanian teachers protest, threaten to boycott 2025 school year

Romanian teachers protest
August 11, 2025

On August 4, prominent representatives of Romanian teachers’ unions gathered for the fourth consecutive day in front of the Ministry of Education and Research to express their opposition to new economic policies implemented under Law no. 141/2025 starting August 1. According to Digi24, teachers have warned that if authorities fail to respond to their demands, they may boycott the final year exams (Baccalaureate) in the fall and delay the start of the new school year.

The unions have called for the resignation of Education Minister Daniel David and accused the government of implementing reforms without proper analysis or assessment of their impact. Changes include: increasing teachers’ weekly workload by two hours, merging hundreds of schools, increasing the number of students per class, reducing hourly wages, and adding administrative duties for school principals and inspectors.

Union leaders warned that these changes reduce administrative and support staff and further limit higher education funding, as per-student allocations remain unchanged. This significantly affects the functioning of research centers and university libraries in covering personnel costs and services.

The teachers’ unions also announced that over 30,000 members will participate in a nationwide march called the “Education March” on September 8, the first day of school, unless the government reverses the implemented changes
